Carrollton City Schools recognized for healthy lunches
On April 11, Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, and First Lady Sandra Deal visited Carrollton City Schools to congratulate them on being awarded the USDA’s Gold award. Carrollton City Schools is the first school district in Georgia to achieve the Gold award in the Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge, a voluntary national certification for schools participating in the national School Lunch Program. The USDA established the Healthier US Schools Challenge to recognize schools that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity.Read more
Gov. launches initiative to improve child fitness
Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Department of Public Health launched Georgia SHAPE, a statewide program merging governmental, philanthropic and academic and business communities to address the state’s childhood obesity epidemic on May 23, 2012. First Lady Sandra Deal; Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health; the Atlanta Falcons; the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation; the Atlanta Braves and other important leaders were on hand to support the governor’s challenge to Georgians to tackle childhood obesity head on. Georgia SHAPE initiative partnerships, support grow
The list of supporters for the Georgia SHAPE initiative continues to grow as various organizations partner to improve the health of Georgia’s children. The Atlanta Falcons, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and the Atlanta Braves are just some of the groups who have joined the ranks to combat the state’s childhood obesity epidemic. “This group of government, education, healthcare and non-for-profit leaders realizes the importance of what the governor is doing and want to do their part,” said Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health.
